Fictional K-pop Bands from Netflix Film Take Over Global Music Charts
A newly released animated K-pop musical has taken the world by storm, with its fictional groups climbing global music charts and challenging real-life K-pop sensations.
"KPop Demon Hunters", now the top-streamed title on Netflix worldwide, has garnered over 33 million views in just two weeks.
The song "Your Idol", performed by the movie’s fictional boy group Saja Boys, has reached No. 2 on Spotify in the United States. Reports state this is the highest ranking ever for a male K-pop group on US
Spotify—surpassing BTS, the long-reigning kings of K-pop.
Another track, "Golden", performed by the fictional girl group Huntr/x, hit No. 3 on Spotify, tying Blackpink’s record as the highest-charting female K-pop group on the platform. Additionally, the film’s soundtrack debuted in the top 10 on the Billboard 200, marking the biggest launch for a soundtrack in 2025 so far.
The song Golden is now being officially released as a single by Republic Records, and according to Variety, Netflix is also submitting the song for award consideration.
The animated film, KPop Demon Hunters, tells the story of Huntr/x, a trio of global pop idols—Rumi, Mira, and Zoey—who live double lives as powerful demon slayers protecting their fans from supernatural threats.
Their music, performed live during concerts, acts as a shield against dark forces. However, their rivals, the Saja Boys, are secretly demons sent by the evil King Gwi-ma to steal the souls of Huntr/x’s fans. The Saja Boys include members named Jinu, Abbs, Romance, Baby, and Mystery.
Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, and produced by Sony Pictures Animation, the story was developed by Kang and brought to life with music contributions from top K-pop producers like Teddy Park (Blackpink) and Lindgren (BTS collaborator).
This breakout success coincides with BTS’s return, as the group recently announced they are heading to the US to work on new projects. With all seven members now finished with their mandatory military service, BTS is preparing for a new album and global tour in 2026.
Meanwhile, Blackpink is also set to hit the road, kicking off their first all-stadium world tour on 5 July. Fans are anticipating a brand-new track that will debut at the start of the Deadline World Tour, marking the group’s return since 2022's "Born Pink" album.
